Effects of auditory stimulation on EEG and motor function

Basic Information

Recruitment status Recruiting
Health condition(s) or Problem(s) studiedHealthy subjects

Countries of recruitment
Study typeInterventional
Intervention(s)The experiment consists of EEG measurement during auditory stimulation, balance measurement during auditory stimulation, and gait measurement. (1) The order of the five conditions (silence, pure tone, isochronous tone, Binaural beat (BB), monaural beat (MB)) will be determined by drawing straws. The pure tone and isochronous tone are 40 Hz sine waves, BB is 400 Hz as the baseline frequency, and the left ear hears 400 Hz and the right ear hears 440 Hz, generating a 40 Hz beat that is the difference between the left and right ears, and MB is a monaural reproduction of 400 Hz and 440 Hz sounds. These auditory stimuli are played at a volume of less than 85 decibels, which is not harmful to health. (2) The EEG will be measured at rest for 10 minutes under the respective stimulus conditions. Immediately after the EEG measurement, balance will be evaluated using a center-of-gravity sway meter with and without auditory stimulation. In this case, EEG is also measured at the same time. (3) Since this study is conducted on young healthy subjects, it is considered difficult to find differences depending on the conditions in a simple upright posture, so a more difficult balance evaluation method will be employed as follows. In the one-leg standing posture, the subject leans forward until the anterior-posterior (AP) component of the center of pressure (CoP) is shifted by 20% from the resting height (as instructed by the experimenter). The subject gazes at a marker placed at eye level in front of him/her and holds that position as still as possible for 20 seconds with arms firmly down beside the body. (4) Gait measurement will be performed with and without each auditory stimulus using the G-WALK gait measuring device. The gait will be measured with and without each auditory stimulus using G-WALK. The gait will be timed up and go test (TUG) and 10 m straight walk. (5) The test subjects were asked to repeat (2) to (4) for each condition. (6) Grip strength of the legs will be measured using a foot grip strength meter.
